Map the exception path first
Happy-path automations are easy to demo. The value appears when missing fields, duplicate records, or API timeouts have a clear owner and recovery path.
Before connecting tools, write down what should happen when the automation cannot finish the job.
Prefer boring orchestration
n8n, Make, Zapier, and similar tools are often enough for the first spine of work. Custom software can come later once the workflow is proven and the edge cases are known.
The goal is leverage and clarity—not building a platform before the process deserves one.
Instrument for trust
Logging, alerts, and a simple run history turn automation from a black box into an operable system.
Teams adopt automations when they can see what ran, what failed, and how to intervene without restarting from scratch.
